The Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
The benefits of craniosacral therapy are an overall improved state of health and vitality. This is achieved by bringing about improved balance and harmony, so that instead of attacking illness, a craniosacral therapist works with the life force to promote true healing. In this way the body is brought into a better state of balance so that it can heal itself. In this context it doesn’t make a lot of sense to list medical conditions – we don’t treat illnesses, we work with people!
By bringing the body into a more balanced state that favours self-healing, many people with chronic illnesses find craniosacral therapy helps either with management of illness, or leads to a significant improvement in symptoms. Recent advertising rules prevent alternative therapists from making specific claims on websites, but you are welcome to discuss your individual situation with me. In the first instance you can send an email, and if you wish we can have a follow up chat on the phone without any obligation.
How Craniosacral Therapy Works
Like most complementary therapists, craniosacral therapists do not attempt to diagnose or cure illness, that’s not how it works. It is a subtle, but well-grounded form of healing that can have excellent results.
A craniosacral therapist works with subtle movements within the body, particularly along the midline (cranio-sacral axis), with the aim of bringing the client into a better state of balance so that the body is better able to heal itself. Working with the whole system and integrating physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the client.
This may sound a little wacky, but really it isn’t. All animals have the incredible ability to heal themselves, and on the whole are self-healing, constantly renewing worn out cells, and maintaining and repairing any parts that are not functioning properly. Illness is often more a case of the repair mechanisms not working as well as they could, rather than an illness that needs to be ‘fought’. So a craniosacral therapist helps to bring about a state of balance enabling improved function of the self healing mechanisms.
This approach can be seen in conventional medicine too: When bones break, they are simply realigned to the right position, they can then get on and mend themselves; wounds are treated by sterilising and closing them, so that we can sit back and watch as the body miraculously repairs itself. Colds and influenza just get better after they body’s defenses swing into action and destroy the invaders, and vaccination works by stimulating the body’s immune system to be prepared for an attack. So it is easy to see why an increase in vitality can improve healing.
Even in the case of serious illnesses like cancer, the medical approach is shifting towards the alternative one of trying to stimulate the body’s own immune system to fight the disease, rather than attacking the illness with toxic chemicals, that cause collateral damage.
So craniosacral therapy has a lot to offer in enabling the body to heal itself from illness and disease. It’s a lot like gardening; create the best conditions and you get stronger, healthier plants.
However, although craniosacral therapy can become an alternative to conventional treatments when all else has failed, it should be seen as a complement to medical practice, and patients should always consult a doctor first for a proper diagnosis and advice.
